WEEK 3: MAQASID SYARIAH AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Hi guys!
This week, we learned about Maqasid Syariah and Sustainable Development. As we already discussed about the definition and concept of Sustainable Development, today we will discuss about Maqasid Syariah and the connection between it.
Maqasid Shariah refers to the objectives or goals of Islamic law (Syariah al-Islamiyah) which is realizing the human well-being by enhancing welfare, or benefit (Maslahah) of the people on one hand and preventing harm (Mafsadah) on the other. In order to protect well-being of humans and nature, there are five core objectives of Maqasid Shariah:
1. Hifz al-Deen (Protection of Faith)
Aim to safeguarding religion and allowing individuals to practice their faith freely. This objective includes creating an environment that respects religious beliefs and supports moral and spiritual growth. For instance, Islam emphasizes interfaith dialogue as a way to build understanding and find commonalities for the benefit of humanity aligned with SDG-17: partnership for the goals.
2.Hifz al-Nafs (Protection of Life)
The second objective of Maqasid Shariah is to preserve and protect life. For example, Islam forbids us from committing suicide or killing others and asks us to protect ourselves. Sustainable development aligns with this goal by focusing on the well-being and prosperity of all people. Islam urges societies to create conditions that support both physical and mental health, highlighting the importance of environmental care, access to healthcare, and efforts to reduce poverty. Related with SDG's-16: to perform peace, justice, and strong intuitions.
3. Hifz al-Aql (Protection of Intellect)
Ensuring the mind’s development and protecting people’s intellectual well-being. Islam values and ask for education, knowledge, and clear thinking for each of mankind, and prohibits substances or practices that harm mental faculties, like alcohol or drugs. Related with SDG-4: Quality Education, which is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
4. Hifz al-Nasl (Protection of Lineage)
SDG-5:Gender equality and Hifz an-Nasl both seek to establish a social environment that promotes justice, stability, and well-being for all family members. Both aim to create a more fair and stable society by recognizing and respecting women's rights and roles.
This responsibility extends to caring for the environment, as a healthy planet is essential for the well-being of future generations. By safeguarding natural resources and promoting environmental sustainability, we help ensure that the earth remains a safe and prosperous place for our children and their descendants.
5. Hifz al-Mal (Protection of Wealth)
SDG-7:Affordable and clean energy, SDG-8: Decent work and economic growth, SDG-9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure, SDG-10: Reduced inequalities, SDG-11: Sustainable cities and communities are related to Hifz al-Mal in Maqasid Shariah, which focuses on property protection and economic well-being. Hifz al-Mal aspires to provide financial well-being while preventing loss and unfairness in the economy and resources.
